The minimum age of labor will be increased from 14 to 16 years as per the Cabinet decision, said Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.

Minister of Skills Development, Employment and Labor Relations Dinesh Gunawardena mentioned this addressing an event organized by the Department of Labor to commemorate International Child Labor Day at the Labor Department Auditorium.

The Minister said that the Department of Labor plays an important role in uplifting the living standards of the people of Sri Lanka by safeguarding their labor rights.

The Minister pointed out that the Department of Labor is already working towards decreasing child labor in the country down to zero percent.

According to the Employment of Women, Young Persons, and Children Act No 47 of 1956, it is a punishable offense to employ children under 14 years of age, the Minister said.

He added that steps will be taken to increase this age limit to 16 years.

කැබිනට් තීරණයට අනුව අවම ශ්‍රම වයස අවුරුදු 14 සිට 16 දක්වා වැඩි කරන බව අමාත්‍ය දිනේෂ් ගුණවර්ධන මහතා පැවසීය.

නිපුණතා සංවර්ධන, රැකියා හා කම්කරු සබඳතා අමාත්‍ය දිනේෂ් ගුණවර්ධන මහතා මේ බව සඳහන් කළේ කම්කරු දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ ශ්‍රවණාගාරයේදී ජාත්‍යන්තර ළමා කම්කරු දිනය සැමරීම සඳහා කම්කරු දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව විසින් සංවිධානය කරන ලද උත්සවයක් අමතමිනි.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ ජනතාවගේ ජීවන තත්ත්වය නංවාලීම සඳහා ඔවුන්ගේ කම්කරු අයිතිවාසිකම් ආරක්ෂා කිරීම සඳහා කම්කරු දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව වැදගත් කාර්යභාරයක් ඉටු කරන බව අමාත්‍යවරයා පැවසීය.

රටේ ළමා ශ්‍රමය සියයට සියයක් දක්වා අඩු කිරීමට කම්කරු දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව දැනටමත් කටයුතු කරමින් සිටින බව අමාත්‍යවරයා පෙන්වා දුන්නේය.

1956 අංක 47 දරණ කාන්තා, තරුණ හා ළමා රැකියා පනතට අනුව වයස අවුරුදු 14 ට අඩු ළමයින් සේවයේ යෙදවීම ද isha ුවම් ලැබිය හැකි වරදක් බව අමාත්‍යවරයා පැවසීය.

මෙම වයස් සීමාව අවුරුදු 16 දක්වා වැඩි කිරීමට පියවර ගන්නා බවද ඔහු පැවසීය.
