In 1990, a mass murder of Sri Lankan police officers took place on June 11. Terrorists of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the world’s most ruthless terrorist organisation, murdered around 700 unarmed police officers in the Eastern Province. Yesterday marked the 30th anniversary of this barbaric act of the LTTE terrorists. This was a black day for the Sri Lanka Police. This is one of the biggest war crimes committed by the LTTE.     

On June 11, 1990, at about 6:00 am, LTTE terrorists surrounded the Batticaloa police station and abducted three policemen. About an hour later, around 250 armed LTTE terrorists occupied the police station. Then Sinhalese police officers along with their families were sent to the airport. Tamil police officers and their families were taken to St Mary’s Church. The acting Officer-in-Charge and four other policemen were detained.  The LTTE terrorists also removed Rs. 45 million in cash, gold jewellery, 109 T56 rifles, 77 T84S rifles, 28 light machine guns, 29 self-loading rifles, 65 sub machine guns, 78 .303 rifles and 78 SAR 80 guns from the police station.

The LTTE terrorists ordered all police stations in the Eastern Province to be vacated by 2:30 pm or face the consequences. Inspector General of Police Ernest Perera instructed the police officers to surrender, at the request of the then President. They laid down their arms after being promised safe conduct and subsequent release.

Then the Sinhalese officers were sent to the Army or Air Force camps, while Tamil officers were accommodated at schools. Meanwhile, the LTTE terrorists abducted 899 officers. About 125 were able to escape. The prisoners were taken to the Vinayagapuram and Trincomalee jungles. Once they had arrived, the LTTE terrorists lined up the officers, tied their hands behind their backs and shot them dead. In all, 774 police officers died in the shooting.

But not all the officers complied at once. The OIC of Kalmunai police station refused to surrender and kept on fighting with the LTTE terrorists  from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. He protested insisting that they “would be tortured, if not killed (if they surrendered).” During that period, he repeatedly requested air support and artillery support, but was denied. At about 5:20 pm, the IGP contacted the OIC and ordered him to cease firing and surrender. When they had laid down their arms, the LTTE terrorists took over and all communications with the Colombo Police headquarters were lost. Then the LTTE terrorists took them to the Thirukkovil jungles and executed them.

In Kalmunai, the LTTE terrorists also fired at an Army convoy, killing 10 Army soldiers. It was reported that 324 police officers who died were Sinhalese and Muslims. All of them were taken to the Thirukkovil jungles by the LTTE terrorists, blindfolded, with hands tied, made to lie down on the ground, and shot.

At the time of this massacre, the LTTE’s peace delegation comprising Jude, an LTTE communication specialist, and two military wing terrorists were at Hilton Hotel, Colombo. Then they were moved to a military camp in Kalutara, under heavy security of the Special Task Force. They were returned to the LTTE a few days later without any harm. According to Major General Sarath Munasinghe’s book, A Soldiers Version, the LTTE radio operator Jude had a message from Prabhakaran: "Whatever happens, ensure that the money offered is brought with you,” the message read.

Thirty years ago on a day like today, around 700 Sinhalese and Muslim families lost their beloved husbands, brothers and fathers. The barbaric act of the LTTE terrorists took their loved ones away from them forever. Thirty years have gone. What about the families of those murdered police officers? Maybe their parents are very old by now. Maybe some of them are no more. Their wives are aged by now. The children of those police officers are adults by now. But all of them are still living with this bitter memory. 

There were some popular words which were used during the past five years from 2015 to 2019. Those are ‘accountability’, ‘missing persons’, ‘compensation’, ‘war crimes’ and many more. Did those who were using those words day and night contact any family which suffered due to crimes such as this committed by the terrorists? Did they try to pay compensation? Did they find out who committed the real war crimes? Did the government which governed the country from 2015 to 2019 do anything about the real victims of these numerous war crimes committed by terrorists? Did anyone go to Geneva demanding justice for the families of those who died?

The word ‘reconciliation’ came into the limelight especially before 2005 and after January 2015. The word is used by many knowing or unknowing the real meaning of this word. The real meaning of this word is ‘the restoration of friendly relations’. But unfortunately, the so-called scholars and other politically affiliated individuals who made close friendships with the political leaders of Sri Lanka fabricated a new meaning for this word ‘reconciliation’ which is totally the opposite of the real meaning of this word. The fabricated new meaning given to the word ‘reconciliation’ was ‘finding faults of Sinhala Buddhists’.

The main objective of giving this new meaning to the word ‘reconciliation’ was making money for NGOs. The so-called ‘peacemakers’ got huge amounts of funds. All they needed to do was find fault with every move of the majority community. They banned words such as ‘nationalism’, ‘national security’ and ‘Bhikkus’. The new fabricated meaning of the word was used all the time to ill-treat, discriminate and antagonise the majority community in Sri Lanka. It was openly done by the governments appointed by them. Unfortunately, it took a long time for the majority Sinhala Buddhist Sri Lankans to realise this bitter truth. They realised this bitter truth and showed that realisation to the entire world on November 16, 2019.

1990 දී ශ්‍රී ලංකා පොලිස් නිලධාරීන් සමූහ ඝාතනය කිරීම ජුනි 11 වන දින සිදු විය. ලෝකයේ වඩාත්ම කුරිරු ත්‍රස්ත සංවිධානය වන දෙමළ ඊලාම් විමුක්ති කොටි (එල්ටීටීඊ) හි ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් නැගෙනහිර පළාතේ නිරායුධ පොලිස් නිලධාරීන් 700 ක් පමණ සමූහ ඝාතනය කළහ. එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන්ගේ මෙම ම්ලේච්ඡ ක්‍රියාවෙහි 30 වන සංවත්සරය ජුනි 11 වන දින සනිටුහන් විය. මෙය ශ්‍රී ලංකා පොලිසියට කළු දිනයක් විය. මෙය එල්ටීටීඊය විසින් සිදු කරන ලද විශාලතම යුද අපරාධවලින් එකකි.

1990 ජුනි 11 වන දින උදේ 6 ට පමණ එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් මඩකලපුව පොලිසිය වටලා පොලිස් නිලධාරීන් තිදෙනෙකු පැහැරගෙන ගියේය. පැයකට පමණ පසු සන්නද්ධ එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් 250 ක් පමණ පොලිස් ස්ථානය අල්ලා ගත්හ. පසුව සිංහල පොලිස් නිලධාරීන් සහ ඔවුන්ගේ පවුල් සමඟ ගුවන් තොටුපළට යවන ලදී. දෙමළ පොලිස් නිලධාරීන් සහ ඔවුන්ගේ පවුල් ශාන්ත මරියා දේවස්ථානය වෙත ගෙන යන ලදී. වැඩබලන නිලධාරී සහ තවත් පොලිස් නිලධාරීන් සිව් දෙනෙකු රඳවා ගනු ලැබීය. එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් විසින් රු. මිලියන 45 ක මුදල්, රන් ආභරණ, ටී 56 රයිෆල් 109, ටී 84 එස් රයිෆල් 77, සැහැල්ලු මැෂින් තුවක්කු 28, ස්වයං පැටවුම් රයිෆල් 29, උප මැෂින් තුවක්කු 65, රයිෆල් 78 .303 සහ එස්ඒආර් 80 තුවක්කු 78 ක් පොලිස් ස්ථානයෙන් පැහැර ගත්හ.

එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් නැගෙනහිර පළාතේ සියලුම පොලිස් ස්ථාන දහවල් 2.30 වන විට ඉවත්ව යන ලෙසට නියෝග කළේය. එවකට ජනාධිපතිවරයාගේ ඉල්ලීම පරිදි යටත් වන ලෙස පොලිස්පති අර්නස්ට් පෙරේරා පොලිස් නිලධාරීන්ට උපදෙස් දුන්නේය. ආරක්ෂිත හැසිරීම සහ පසුව නිදහස් කරන බවට පොරොන්දු වීමෙන් පසු ඔවුහු ආයුධ බිම තැබූහ.

ඉන්පසුව සිංහල නිලධාරීන් යුද හමුදා හෝ ගුවන් හමුදා කඳවුරුවලට යවා ඇති අතර දෙමළ නිලධාරීන් පාසල්වල නවාතැන් ගෙන තිබේ. මේ අතර එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් නිලධාරීන් 899 දෙනෙකු පැහැරගෙන ගොස් තිබේ. 125 ක් පමණ පැන යාමට හැකි විය. සිරකරුවන් විනයගපුරම් සහ ත්‍රිකුණාමලයේ වනාන්තර වෙත ගෙන යන ලදී. ඔවුන් පැමිණි විගස එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් නිලධාරීන් පෙළ ගැසී, අත් පිටුපස බැඳ, වෙඩි තබා ඝාතනය කළහ. වෙඩි තැබීමෙන් පොලිස් නිලධාරීන් 774 ක් මිය ගියහ.

නමුත් සියලුම නිලධාරීන් එකවරම ඊට එකඟ නොවීය. කල්මුනායි පොලිසියේ ස්ථානාධිපතිවරයා යටත් වීම ප්‍රතික්ෂේප කළ අතර පස්වරු 3.00 සිට සවස 6 දක්වා එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් සමඟ දිගටම සටන් කළේය. “ඔවුන් මරණයට පත් නොවන්නේ නම් (ඔවුන් යටත් වුවහොත්) ඔවුන්ට වධහිංසා පමුණුවනු ඇතැයි” ඔහු තරයේ කියා සිටියේය. එම කාලය තුළ ඔහු නැවත නැවතත් ගුවන් ආධාර සහ කාලතුවක්කු ආධාර ඉල්ලා සිටියද එය ප්‍රතික්ෂේප විය. සවස 5: 20 ට පමණ පොලිස්පතිවරයා ස්ථානාධිපතිවරයා අමතා වෙඩි තැබීම නතර කර යටත් වන ලෙස ඔහුට නියෝග කළේය. ඔවුන් ආයුධ බිම තැබූ පසු එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් අත්පත් කර ගත් අතර කොළඹ පොලිස් මූලස්ථානය සමඟ තිබූ සියලු සන්නිවේදනයන් නැති විය. පසුව එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් ඔවුන්ව තිරුකෝවිල් වනාන්තරයට ගෙන ගොස් මරා දැමූහ.

කල්මුනායි හි දී එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් ද හමුදා භටයන් වෙත වෙඩි තබා හමුදා සෙබළුන් 10 දෙනෙකු ඝාතනය කළහ. මියගිය පොලිස් නිලධාරීන් 324 දෙනා සිංහල සහ මුස්ලිම් ජාතිකයින් බව වාර්තා විය. එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් විසින් ඔවුන් සියල්ලන්ම තිරුකොවිල් වනාන්තරයට ගෙන ගොස්, දෑස් බැඳ, දෑත් බැඳ, බිම වැතිර සිටිමින් වෙඩි තබා ඇත.

මෙම සංහාරය සිදුවන අවස්ථාවේ එල්ටීටීඊයේ සාම දූත පිරිස ජූඩ්, එල්ටීටීඊ සන්නිවේදන විශේෂඥයෙකු සහ මිලිටරි ත‍්‍රස්තවාදීන් දෙදෙනෙකුගෙන් සමන්විත විය. ඔවුන් කොළඹ හිල්ටන් හෝටලයේ සිටියහ. පසුව ඔවුන් විශේෂ කාර්ය සාධක බලකායේ දැඩි ආරක්ෂාව යටතේ කළුතරයේ හමුදා කඳවුරකට ගෙන යන ලදී. දින කිහිපයකට පසු ඔවුන් කිසිදු හානියක් නොමැතිව නැවත එල්ටීටීඊයට යවන ලදී. මේජර් ජෙනරාල් සරත් මුනසිංගේ “සොල්දාදුවන්ගේ අනුවාදය” ට අනුව, එල්ටීටීඊ ගුවන් විදුලි ක්‍රියාකරු ජූඩ්ට ප්‍රභාකරන්ගෙන් පණිවිඩයක් ලැබුණි: “කුමක් සිදු වුවද, ලබා දෙන මුදල් ඔබ සමඟ ගෙන එන බවට සහතික වන්න,” පණිවිඩය කියවිය.

මීට වසර තිහකට පෙර අද වැනි දිනයක සිංහල හා මුස්ලිම් පවුල් 700 කට පමණ තම ආදරණීය ස්වාමිපුරුෂයන්, සහෝදරයන් සහ පියවරුන් අහිමි විය. එල්ටීටීඊ ත්‍රස්තවාදීන්ගේ ම්ලේච්ඡ ක්‍රියාව ඔවුන්ගේ ආදරණීයයන් සදහටම ඔවුන්ගෙන් ඈත් කළේය. අවුරුදු තිහක් ගෙවී ගොස් ඇත. ඝාතනයට ලක්වූ පොලිස් නිලධාරීන්ගේ පවුල් ගැන කුමක් කිව හැකිද? සමහර විට ඔවුන්ගේ දෙමව්පියන් මේ වන විට ඉතා වයස්ගත වී ඇත. සමහර විට ඔවුන්ගෙන් සමහරක් තවත් නැත. ඔවුන්ගේ භාර්යාවන් මේ වන විට වයස්ගත වී ඇත. එම පොලිස් නිලධාරීන්ගේ දරුවන් මේ වන විට වැඩිහිටියන් ය. නමුත් ඔවුන් සියල්ලන්ම තවමත් මෙම කටුක මතකය සමඟ ජීවත් වෙති.

2015 සිට 2019 දක්වා පසුගිය වසර පහ තුළ භාවිතා කරන ලද ජනප්‍රිය වචන කිහිපයක් තිබේ. ඒවා නම් ‘වගවීම’, ‘අතුරුදහන් වූවන්’, ‘වන්දි’, ‘යුද අපරාධ’ සහ තවත් බොහෝ දේ ය. දිවා රෑ නොබලා එම වචන භාවිතා කළ අය ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් විසින් සිදු කරන ලද මෙවැනි අපරාධ හේතුවෙන් පීඩා විඳි ඕනෑම පවුලක් හා සම්බන්ධ වී තිබේද? ඔවුන් වන්දි ගෙවීමට උත්සාහ කළාද? සැබෑ යුද අපරාධ කළේ කවුදැයි ඔවුන් සොයා ගත්තාද? 2015 සිට 2019 දක්වා රට පාලනය කළ රජය ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් විසින් සිදු කරන ලද මෙම යුද අපරාධ රාශියේ සැබෑ ගොදුරු වූවන් ගැන යමක් කර තිබේද? මියගිය අයගේ පවුල්වලට යුක්තිය ඉල්ලා කිසිවෙකු ජිනීවා නුවරට ගියාද?

සංහිඳියාව’ යන වචනය විශේෂයෙන් 2005 ට පෙර සහ 2015 ජනවාරි මාසයෙන් පසුව ජනප්‍රියත්වයට පත්විය. මෙම වචනයේ සැබෑ අරුත දැන හෝ නොදැන බොහෝ දෙනෙක් මෙම වචනය භාවිතා කරති. මෙම වචනයේ සැබෑ අරුත වන්නේ ‘මිත්‍ර සබඳතා යථා තත්ත්වයට පත් කිරීමයි’. එහෙත් අවාසනාවකට මෙන්, ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ දේශපාලන නායකයන් සමඟ සමීප මිත්‍රත්වයක් ඇති කර ගත් ඊනියා විද්වතුන් සහ අනෙකුත් දේශපාලනික වශයෙන් අනුබද්ධ පුද්ගලයින් මෙම වචනයේ නව අරුතක් නිර්මාණය කළේ ‘සංහිඳියාව’ යන වචනයට මෙම වචනයේ සැබෑ අරුත මුළුමනින්ම ප්‍රතිවිරුද්ධ දෙයකි. ‘සංහිඳියාව’ යන වචනයට ලබා දී ඇති ව්‍යාජ නව අරුත වූයේ ‘සිංහල බෞද්ධයන්ගේ වැරදි සොයා ගැනීමයි’.

‘සංහිඳියාව’ යන වචනයට මෙම නව අරුත ලබා දීමේ ප්‍රධාන පරමාර්ථය වූයේ රාජ්‍ය නොවන සංවිධාන සඳහා මුදල් ඉපයීමයි. ඊනියා ‘සාමය ඇති කරන්නන්ට’ විශාල මුදල් ප්‍රමාණයක් ලැබුණි. ඔවුන්ට කළ යුතුව තිබුණේ බහුතර ප්‍රජාවේ සෑම පියවරකදීම වරදක් සෙවීම පමණි. ඔවුන් ‘ජාතිකවාදය’, ‘ජාතික ආරක්ෂාව’ සහ ‘භික්කස්’ වැනි වචන තහනම් කළහ. මෙම වචනයේ නව ව්‍යාජ අර්ථය ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ බහුතර ප්‍රජාවට අයුතු ලෙස සැලකීමට, වෙනස් කොට සැලකීමට හා විරුද්ධ වීමට සෑම විටම භාවිතා කරන ලදී. එය ඔවුන් විසින් පත් කරන ලද රජයන් විසින් විවෘතව සිදු කරන ලදී. අවාසනාවකට මෙන්, බහුතර සිංහල බෞද්ධ ශ්‍රී ලාංකිකයින්ට මෙම කටුක සත්‍යය අවබෝධ කර ගැනීමට බොහෝ කාලයක් ගත විය. ඔවුන් මෙම කටුක සත්‍යය වටහා ගත් අතර එම අවබෝධය 2019 නොවැම්බර් 16 වන දින මුළු ලෝකයටම පෙන්වීය.
