The United Nations has marked September 15th as the International Day of Democracy. On this day the UN urges all governments to promote and uphold the principles of democracy.
Democracy is a form of government in which citizens exercise power by voting. Democracy is built on a foundation of inclusion. Equal treatment and participation are also important components. Democracy is also a building block for peace and human rights. Countries with democracies have a constitution, which helps to create an environment of protection for its citizens. Democratic states also are less likely to breed terrorists. They are also more active in the global economy.
On November 8, 2007, the UN general assembly made September 15th the International Day of Democracy. The assembly invited individuals and organizations to commemorate the day. It also called on governments to share experiences of promoting democracy. The first International Day of Democracy was celebrated in 2008 by 46 national parliaments. This date marked the 20th anniversary of the first International Conference of New or Restored Democracies.
Every year the UN creates a new theme for the International Day of Democracy. Past themes have included: “Strengthening Voices for Democracy,” “Engaging Youth on Democracy,” and “Inclusion and Participation as Foundations of Democracy.”
# ජාත්‍යන්තර ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදී දිනය - සැප්තැම්බර් 15.
එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ සංවිධානය සැප්තැම්බර් 15 ජාත්‍යන්තර ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදී දිනය ලෙස සලකුණු කර තිබේ. මෙම දිනයේ දී එක්සත් ජාතීන් සියලු රජයන්ගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටින්නේ ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදයේ මූලධර්ම ප්‍රවර්ධනය කර ආරක්ෂා කරන ලෙසයි.
ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදය යනු ඡන්දය දීමෙන් පුරවැසියන් බලය ක්‍රියාත්මක කරන ආණ්ඩුවකි. ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදය ගොඩනැගී ඇත්තේ ඇතුළත් කිරීමේ පදනමක් මත ය. සමාන ප්‍රතිකාර හා සහභාගීත්වය ද වැදගත් අංගයකි. ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදය යනු සාමය සහ මානව හිමිකම් සඳහා ගොඩනැඟිලි කොටසකි. ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදී රටවල් ඇති රටවලට ව්‍යවස්ථාවක් ඇති අතර එය එහි පුරවැසියන්ට ආරක්ෂිත පරිසරයක් නිර්මාණය කිරීමට උපකාරී වේ. ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදී රාජ්‍යයන් ද ත්‍රස්තවාදීන් බෝ කිරීමට ඇති ඉඩකඩ අඩු ය. ඔවුන් ගෝලීය ආර්ථිකයේ ද වඩාත් ක්‍රියාකාරී ය.
2007 නොවැම්බර් 8 වන දින එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ මහා මණ්ඩලය විසින් සැප්තැම්බර් 15 වන දින ජාත්‍යන්තර ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදී දිනය බවට පත් කරන ලදී. දිනය සැමරීම සඳහා සභාව විසින් පුද්ගලයන්ට සහ සංවිධානවලට ආරාධනා කරන ලදී. ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදය ප්‍රවර්ධනය කිරීමේ අත්දැකීම් බෙදාහදා ගන්නා ලෙස ද එය රජයන්ගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටියේය. පළමු ජාත්‍යන්තර ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදී දිනය 2008 දී ජාතික පාර්ලිමේන්තු 46 ක් විසින් සමරනු ලැබීය. මෙම දිනය නව හෝ ප්‍රතිෂ්ඨාපිත ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදයේ පළමු ජාත්‍යන්තර සමුළුවේ 20 වන සංවත්සරය සනිටුහන් කළේය.
සෑම වසරකම එක්සත් ජාතීන් ජාත්‍යන්තර ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදී දිනය සඳහා නව තේමාවක් නිර්මාණය කරයි. අතීත තේමාවන් අතරට “ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදය සඳහා හඬ ශක්තිමත් කිරීම”, “ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදය සඳහා තරුණයින් සම්බන්ධ කර ගැනීම” සහ “ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදයේ පදනම් ලෙස ඇතුළත් කිරීම සහ සහභාගී වීම” ඇතුළත් වේ.
