World Water Monitoring Day was established in 2003 by America's Clean Water Foundation as a global educational outreach program that aims to build public awareness and involvement in protecting water resources around the world by empowering citizens to carry out basic monitoring of their local water bodies.
A simple test kit enables everyone, children and adults, to sample local water bodies for a set of water quality parameters including temperature, acidity (pH), clarity (turbidity) and dissolved oxygen (DO). Results are then shared with participating communities around the globe through the WWMD website.
The primary goal of World Water Monitoring Day is to educate and engage citizens in the protection of the world’s water resources. Many people are unaware of the impact their behaviours have on the quality of their water resources. Conducting simple monitoring tests teaches participants about some of the most common indicators of water health and encourages further participation in more formal citizen monitoring efforts.
The event is now coordinated by the Water Environment Federation and the International Water Association.
This year theme for World Water Monitoring Day 2020 is ‘Solve Water.’

ලෝක ජල අධීක්ෂණ දිනය 2003 දී ඇමරිකාවේ පිරිසිදු ජල පදනම විසින් ගෝලීය අධ්‍යාපනික වැඩසටහනක් ලෙස ස්ථාපිත කරන ලද අතර එය ලොව පුරා ජල සම්පත් ආරක්ෂා කිරීම සඳහා මහජනතාව දැනුවත් කිරීම සහ ඔවුන්ගේ දේශීය ජල මූලාශ්‍ර පිළිබඳ මූලික අධීක්ෂණයක් සිදු කිරීමට පුරවැසියන් බල ගැන්වීම තුළින් මහජනතාව දැනුවත් කිරීම සහ සහභාගීත්වය අරමුණු කර ගෙන ඇත.
සරල පරීක්ෂණ කට්ටලයක් මඟින් සෑම දෙනාටම, ළමයින්ට සහ වැඩිහිටියන්ට, උෂ්ණත්වය, ආම්ලිකතාවය (pH අගය), පැහැදිලිකම (කැලඹීම) සහ ද්‍රාවිත ඔක්සිජන් (DO) ඇතුළු ජලයේ ගුණාත්මක පරාමිතීන් සමූහයක් සඳහා දේශීය ජල මූලාශ්‍ර සාම්පල ලබා ගත හැකිය. ප්‍රතිඵල පසුව WWMD වෙබ් අඩවිය හරහා ලොව පුරා සහභාගී වන ප්‍රජාවන් සමඟ බෙදා ගනු ලැබේ.
ලෝක ජල අධීක්ෂණ දිනයේ මූලික පරමාර්ථය වන්නේ ලෝකයේ ජල සම්පත් ආරක්ෂා කිරීම සඳහා පුරවැසියන් දැනුවත් කිරීම හා සම්බන්ධ කිරීමයි. ඔවුන්ගේ හැසිරීම් ඔවුන්ගේ ජල මූලාශ්‍රවල ගුණාත්මකභාවය කෙරෙහි ඇති කරන බලපෑම ගැන බොහෝ අය නොදැන සිටිති. ජල සෞඛ්‍යය පිළිබඳ වඩාත් පොදු දර්ශකයන් ගැන සරල අධීක්ෂණ පරීක්ෂණ පරීක්ෂණ පැවැත්වීම සහ විධිමත් පුරවැසිකරණ ප්‍රයත්නයන් සඳහා වැඩි සහභාගීත්වයක් දිරිමත් කිරීම.
මෙම අවස්ථාව දැන් ජල පරිසර සම්මේලනය සහ ජාත්‍යන්තර ජල සංගමය විසින් සම්බන්ධීකරණය කරනු ලැබේ.
2020 ලෝක ජල අධීක්ෂණ දිනය සඳහා වසරේ තේමාව වන්නේ ‘ජලය විසඳීම’ යන්නයි.
