# International Translation Day - 30 September.

International Translation Day on September 30th pays tribute to language professionals who offer translation and interpretation services. In doing so, translators bring nations together, facilitate dialogue, and contribute to world peace.

There are over 6,500 spoken languages in the world. It is challenging to overcome language barriers. Translators and interpreters make it easier to do so. Translation and interpretation are two different things. Translation involves the written word. Interpretation involves the spoken word.

If a book or report needs to be transposed to another language, a translator is required. Interpreters take spoken information and make it understandable in another language. Interpretation isn’t just knowing another language, however. Interpreters must understand the culture as well.

The International Federation of Translators (FIT) has been celebrating translation day since its inception in 1953. In 1991 the FIT wanted to have an officially recognized International Translation Day. It wasn’t until 2017 that the UN passed a resolution declaring September 30 as International Translation Day.

The date of September 30th celebrates the Feast of St. Jerome, the patron Saint of translators. St. Jerome is credited for translating most of the Bible from Latin and Hebrew to Greek. Jerome died near Bethlehem on 30 September 420.

පරිවර්තන හා අර්ථ නිරූපණ සේවා සපයන භාෂා වෘත්තිකයින්ට සැප්තැම්බර් 30 වන දින ජාත්‍යන්තර පරිවර්තන දිනය උපහාර දක්වයි. එසේ කිරීමෙන් පරිවර්තකයන් හා ජාතීන් එකට ගෙන ඒම, සංවාදයට පහසුකම් සැපයීම සහ ලෝක සාමයට දායක වීම අපේක්ෂා කෙරේ.

ලෝකයේ කථන භාෂා 6,500 කට වඩා තිබේ. භාෂා බාධක ජය ගැනීම අභියෝගයකි. පරිවර්තකයන් සහ අර්ථ නිරූපකයන් එය කිරීම පහසු කරයි. පරිවර්තනය සහ අර්ථ නිරූපණය වෙනස් කරුණු දෙකකි. පරිවර්තනයට ලිඛිත වචනය ඇතුළත් වේ. අර්ථ නිරූපණයට කථන වචනය ඇතුළත් වේ.

පොතක් හෝ වාර්තාවක් වෙනත් භාෂාවකට මාරු කිරීමට අවශ්‍ය නම්, පරිවර්තකයෙකු අවශ්‍ය වේ. අර්ථ නිරූපකයන් කථන තොරතුරු ගෙන එය වෙනත් භාෂාවකින් තේරුම් ගත හැකි ලෙස පත් කරයි. කෙසේ වෙතත් අර්ථ නිරූපණයට වෙනත් භාෂාවක් දැන ගැනීම පමණක් ප්‍රමාණවත් නොවේ. අර්ථ නිරූපකයන් සංස්කෘතිය ද තේරුම් ගත යුතුය.

අන්තර්ජාතික පරිවර්තක සම්මේලනය (FIT) 1953 ආරම්භයේ සිටම පරිවර්තන දිනය සමරනු ලැබීය. 1991 දී FIT හට නිල වශයෙන් පිළිගත් ජාත්‍යන්තර පරිවර්තන දිනයක් පැවැත්වීමට අවශ්‍ය විය. එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ සංවිධානය සැප්තැම්බර් 30 ජාත්‍යන්තර පරිවර්තන දිනය ලෙස ප්‍රකාශයට පත් කළේ 2017 ය.

පරිවර්තකයන්ගේ අනුශාසක ශාන්ත ජෙරොම්ගේ මංගල්‍යය සැප්තැම්බර් 30 වන දින සමරනු ලැබේ. බයිබලය බොහෝමයක් ලතින් සහ හෙබ්‍රෙව් භාෂාවෙන් ග්‍රීක භාෂාවට පරිවර්තනය කිරීමේ ගෞරවය ශාන්ත ජෙරොම්ට හිමි වේ. ජෙරොම් 420 සැප්තැම්බර් 30 වන දින බෙත්ලෙහෙම අසලදී මිය ගියේය.
