# Lee Teng-hui: Taiwan's 'father of democracy' dies.
Former Taiwanese President Lee Teng-hui, considered the "father of Taiwan's democracy", has died at the age of 97.
He served as president of Taiwan, from 1988 to 2000.
Lee was credited with ending autocratic rule in favour of pluralism and democracy - but was also a controversial figure.
His attempts to delink the island from China sparked tensions with Beijing, which sees Taiwan as part of its territory to be reunited one day.
Lee died on Thursday 30 July 2020 from septic shock and multiple organ failure in Taipei, after being in hospital for nearly six months.
During his time in office he led constitutional changes towards a more democratic political layout, including direct presidential elections.

ඔහු 1988 සිට 2000 දක්වා තායිවානයේ ජනාධිපති ලෙස සේවය කළේය.
බහුත්වයට හා ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදයට පක්ෂව අත්තනෝමතික පාලනය අවසන් කිරීමේ ගෞරවය ලීට හිමිවිය - නමුත් එය මතභේදාත්මක චරිතයකි.
චීනයෙන් දිවයින බැහැර කිරීමට ඔහු දැරූ උත්සාහය බීජිනය සමඟ ආතතීන්ට තුඩු දුන් අතර තායිවානය තම භූමියේ කොටසක් ලෙස දීනකදී යළිත් එක්විය යුතු යැයි දකී.
මාස හයකට ආසන්න කාලයක් රෝහල් ගතව සිටියදී ලී 2020 ජූලි 30 වන බ්‍රහස්පතින්දා තායිපේහි සෙප්ටික් කම්පනය සහ බහු අවයව අසමත්වීම හේතුවෙන් මිය ගියේය.
ඔහු බලයේ සිටි කාලය තුළ සෘජු ජනාධිපතිවරණය ඇතුළු වඩාත් ප්‍රජාතන්ත්‍රවාදී දේශපාලන සැලැස්මක් කරා ව්‍යවස්ථාමය වෙනස්කම් සිදු කළේය.
