# Mali Coup - Military Soldiers promises to hold an elections after ousting president.
The soldiers who ousted Mali's President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta say they plan to set up a civilian transitional government and hold new elections.
The spokesman for the soldiers said they acted to prevent the country falling further into chaos.
President Keïta resigned on Tuesday 18 August 2020 night saying he did not want "blood to be spilled to keep me in power."
The African Union, regional leaders, and the UN have condemned the coup.
South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa, the current African Union (AU) chairperson, urged the soldiers to release President Keïta and others government officials being detained.
The UN Security Council is to hold an emergency session on Wednesday 19 August 2020 to discuss the latest developments.
Mali, a vast country stretching into the Sahara Desert is among the poorest countries in the world and has experienced several military takeovers. It is currently battling to contain a wave of jihadist attacks and ethnic violence.

“මාව බලයේ තබා ගැනීම සඳහා ලේ වැගිරවීම” තමාට අවශ්‍ය නැති බව පවසමින් ජනාධිපති කීටා 2020 අගෝස්තු 18 වෙනි අඟහරුවාදා රාත්‍රියේ ඉල්ලා අස්විය.

වත්මන් අප්‍රිකානු සංගමයේ (AU) සභාපතිනිය වන දකුණු අප්‍රිකානු ජනාධිපති සිරිල් රමෆෝසා, ජනාධිපති කීස්ටා සහ අනෙකුත් රජයේ නිලධාරීන් රඳවා තබා ගන්නා ලෙස සොල්දාදුවන්ගෙන් ඉල්ලා සිටියේය.
නවතම වර්ධනයන් සාකච්ඡා කිරීම සඳහා එක්සත් ජාතීන්ගේ ආරක්ෂක මණ්ඩලය 2020 අගෝස්තු 19 බදාදා හදිසි සැසියක් පැවැත්වීමට නියමිතය.
