# Turkey is going to convert Hagia Sophia into a mosque.
Turkey’s highest court this week convened to decide whether Istanbul’s iconic Hagia Sophia museum can be turned into a mosque. The court’s ruling is likely in two weeks.
The 1,500-year-old structure, listed as a Unesco World Heritage site, was originally a cathedral before it was turned into a mosque. In the 1930s, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, shut down the mosque and turned it into a museum in an attempt to make the country more secular.
The construction of this iconic structure in Istanbul started in 532 AD during the reign of Justinian I, the ruler of the Byzantine Empire, when the city was known as Constantinople.

වසර 1,500 ක් පැරණි මෙම ව්‍යුහය යුනෙස්කෝ ලෝක උරුම අඩවියක් ලෙස ලැයිස්තුගත කර ඇති අතර එය මුස්ලිම් පල්ලියක් බවට පත් කිරීමට පෙර ආසන දෙව්මැදුරකි. 1930 ගණන් වලදී තුර්කි ජනරජයේ නිර්මාතෘ මුස්තාපා කෙමාල් අටටුර්ක් පල්ලිය වසා දමා කෞතුකාගාරයක් බවට පත් කළේ රට වඩාත් ලෞකික බවට පත් කිරීමේ උත්සාහයක් වශයෙනි.
ඉස්තාන්බුල්හි මෙම සුවිශේෂී ව්‍යුහයේ ඉදිකිරීම් ක්‍රි.ව. 532 දී බයිසැන්තියානු අධිරාජ්‍යයේ පාලකයා වූ පළමුවන ජස්ටීනියානු පාලන සමයේදී නගරය කොන්ස්තන්තිනෝපල් ලෙස හැදින්විය.
