# Maldives celebrated 55th Independence Day - 26 July.
Maldives has celebrated its 55th Independence day on 26 July 2020.
The Maldives became a protectorate state of the British Empire on 16th December 1887.
On July 26th 1965, An agreement was signed by the Maldives' Prime Minister and the British Ambassador which concluded the ending of the British Empire's responsibility in terms of defence and external affairs of the Maldives, which established the Independence of the country.
