World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2023: Theme

The International Labour Organization (ILO) selects the theme for World Day for Safety and Health at Work, and for this year, it is “A safe and healthy working environment as a fundamental principle and right at work.” The central objective of this event is to investigate feasible methods of implementing this essential human right in workplaces globally.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work: Significance.

A safe and healthy working environment is a fundamental principle and right at work

In June 2022, the International Labour Conference (ILC) decided to include “a safe and healthy working environment” in the ILO’s framework of fundamental principles and rights at work.

On 28 April 2023, the ILO celebrates this decision, bringing together experts and constituents to discuss the implications it has for the world of work, as well as how to practically implement this right in the world of work.

History

The International Labour Organization (ILO) established the World Day for Safety and Health at Work in 2003 as an annual global initiative to raise awareness of the importance of safety and health in the workplace. The date chosen for this event coincides with the adoption of the Occupational Safety and Health Convention by the ILO on April 28, 1971.

This celebration is an integral part of the Global Strategy on Occupational Safety and Health of the ILO, as documented in the Conclusions of the International Labour Conference in June 2003.

28 April is also the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers organized worldwide by the trade union movement since 1996.
