World's largest star sapphire cluster found in Sri Lanka.

The world's largest cluster of star sapphires has been unearthed inside a backyard in Sri Lanka. The 510-kilogram specimen was found by workmen digging a well in the gem-rich Ratnapura area.

Weighing 2.5 million carats, the gem could be worth $100 million in the international market. Star sapphires are pale blue in colour and are named for the distinct optical-like star effect within the stone.

This star sapphire cluster has been named "Serendipity Sapphire".

Ratnapura, the area where the cluster was found, is known as the gem capital of Sri Lanka. The South Asian country is a leading exporter of sapphires and other precious gems.
