It’s the biggest single donation to the ACLU’s political work on abortion rights in the group’s history. And though it accounts for a fraction of the hundreds of millions of dollars groups on both sides of the abortion fight plan to spend this year, Anthony Romero, the organization’s executive director, said he hopes it becomes “a rallying cry for others to follow” and inspires other wealthy progressives to open their pocketbooks.
The ACLU said it will use these funds to beef up its get-out-the-vote and voter education efforts — particularly in overlooked state and local races.
Sandberg, who has a history of donating to Democratic powerbrokers and political action committees that work to elect abortion-rights supporters, said this latest donation begins a new chapter as she looks to take a more active role in politics.
