Ex-South Korean President Roh Tae-woo dies.

Former South Korean President Roh Tae-woo, who took part in a military coup and later won the election that was the country’s first move towards democracy before he was imprisoned for corruption, died on Tuesday. He was 88.

The Seoul National University Hospital said Roh died while being treated for an illness. It gave no further details. He served as the President of South Korea from 1988 to 1993. 

Roh established diplomatic relations with Hungary in 1989, the year the Berlin Wall fell, the Soviet Union in 1990 and China in 1992.

He was a leader of the Democratic Justice Party and is known for passing the June Declaration in 1987. 

He oversaw preparations for the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, which he officially declared open.
