UNESCO Declares 2021 as ‘International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development’.

UNESCO has declared the year 2021 as ‘International Year of Creative Economy for Sustainable Development’.

The decision was taken during the 74th session of the UN General Assembly in November 2019.

Aim:  to raise awareness, promote cooperation and networking, encourage sharing best practices and experiences, enhance human resource capacity, promote an enabling environment at all levels as well as tackle the challenges of creative economy.

The Paris-based body has now decided to launch an international prize in the field of ‘creative economy’ in the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a Bangladeshi politician, who was called the “Father of the Nation” in Bangladesh. He served as the first President of Bangladesh.

The biennial prize will be given away once in two years, starting from November 2021. The prize will carry cash reward of USD 50 thousand.

The award will recognise exceptional initiatives taken by cultural workers and organizations in the development of the creative economy.

Currently, there are 23 UNESCO International Awards in the name of international celebrities and organisations. This is the first time that UNESCO has decided to introduce an award in the name of someone from Bangladesh.
