International Migrants Day - 18 December.

International Migrants Day - 18 December.

International Migrants Day is an international day observed on December 18 as International Migrants Day appointed by the General Assembly of United Nations on December 4, 2000 taking into account the large and increasing number of migrants in the world. On 18 December 1990, the General Assembly had adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

UN Member States and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations are invited to observe International Migrants Day through the dissemination of information on the human rights and fundamental freedoms of migrants, and through the sharing of experiences and the design of actions to ensure their protection.

In 1997, Filipino and other Asian migrant organizations began celebrating and promoting December 18 as the International Day of Solidarity with Migrants. This date was chosen because it was on December 18, 1990 that the UN adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of all Migrants Workers and Members of Their Families.

Since year 2000, the international community has used December 18, International Migrants Day, to highlight the human rights of migrants. Making migrant voices heard is the common thread throughout International Migrants Day events and this is precisely what is at the heart of Radio 1812: linking communities worldwide around the pressing and ever present issue of migrant rights.
