Maia Sandu Becomes Moldova’s First-Ever Woman President.
Moldova has elected the country's first-ever woman President, with former Prime Minister Maia Sandu overwhelmingly claiming 57.7% of the popular vote on 16 November 2020.
Sandu, who is 48, won after a run-off with the pro-Russia incumbent Igor Dodon, who got 42.2% of the vote.
Sandu is a former World Bank economist who favours closer ties with the European Union. Mr Dodon, meanwhile, is openly backed by Russia.
Moldova has the 23rd highest global gender gap in the world, placing it between Colombia and Trinidad and Tobago in the world's gender equality list.
