Archaeologists Excavate 100 Million Old Dinosaur Fossils in Meghalaya

Dinosaur bones that date back to at least 100 million years have been discovered by researchers in Meghalaya.

Fossil bone fragments of sauropod dinosaurs have been discovered by researchers in the West Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya. The discovery has been made by the researchers of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) during a recent field trip.

The researchers viewed that this is for the first time that remains of sauropods of probable Titanosaurian origin discovered in the Northeast. The bone fragments were collected from poorly sorted and greenish arkosic sandstone that was interlaid with pebbly beds. Over 25 disarticulated and fragmentary bone specimens were recovered during the discovery.

Sauropods had very long necks, long tails, small heads relative to the rest of their body, and four thick, pillar-like legs. They are notable for the enormous sizes attained by some species, and the group includes the largest animals to have ever lived on land.

Meghalaya is the only northeastern state to have discovered Sauropod bones with the probable origin linked to the Titanosaurian group of dinosaurs. These are the group of sauropod dinosaurs, which belonged to Africa, Asia, South America, North America, Europe, Australia and Antarctica.

Other than Meghalaya, Sauropod bones having titanosaurian affinity have been discovered only in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
