NASA on Tuesday 25 May 2021 announced that it is planning to send its first mobile robot to the Moon in late 2023 that will conduct a search for the presence of ice and other resources on and below the lunar surface.
The Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover, or VIPER, will help the space agency to harvest resources on the lunar South Pole such that it will benefit the long-term human exploration of the celestial body in the future.
VIPER will use the headlights in its design to light areas on the moon than haven’t witnessed the sunlight in billions of years and are also the coldest regions in the universe. According to a release published on May 25, NASA plans to send the rover on the moon as a part of its Artemis program.
