International Thalassaemia Day - 08 May.

Celebrated on the 8th of May, the International Thalassaemia Day is devoted to raising awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about thalassaemia, promoting and strengthening the lifelong and difficult struggle of patients against this severe blood disease, and commemorating all the people who are no longer with us, while renewing our promise to keep fighting until the final cure for thalassaemia is found.

History:

In 1994, Panos Englezos, President and Founder of the Thalassemia International Federation, established World Thalassaemia Day in memory of his son George and other Thalassaemia patients who displayed great courage in their battle against the disease. Since then, May 8 has been dedicated to commemorating World Thalassaemia Day each year.

Significance:

Thalassaemia is a genetic blood disorder inherited by children from their parents. On World Thalassaemia Day, efforts are made to dispel myths surrounding the disorder and disseminate accurate information to the public. Organizations and global communities work together to ensure that Thalassaemia treatment is accessible to everyone, regardless of any factors. It is also advised to consult with a doctor before marrying a Thalassaemia patient to prevent potential health complications in the future.

By raising awareness about Thalassaemia on World Thalassaemia Day, we aim to promote understanding, support affected individuals and families, and encourage advancements in treatment and care for this condition.

Theme:

May 8, 2023 is International Thalassaemia Day. The theme of the event this year is “Strengthening Education to Bridge the Thalassaemia Care Gap”.

By maximizing the knowledge and skills of every person affected by thalassaemia and the people who care for them, we can achieve positive changes in health behaviours, health outcomes and quality of life, and reduce the disease burden for patients and the society.
