Coronation of Charles III and Camilla.

The coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as king and queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms, took place on 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey. Charles acceded to the throne on 8 September 2022, upon the death of his mother, Elizabeth II.

The ceremony was structured around an Anglican service of Holy Communion. It included Charles being anointed with holy oil, receiving the coronation regalia, and being crowned, emphasising his spiritual role and secular responsibilities. Representatives of the Church of England and the British royal family declared their allegiance to him, and the people throughout the Commonwealth realms were invited to do so. Camilla was crowned in a shorter and simpler ceremony. After the service, members of the royal family travelled to Buckingham Palace in a state procession and appeared on the palace's rear and front balconies. Charles and Camilla's coronation service was altered from past British coronations to represent multiple faiths, cultures, and communities across the United Kingdom, and was shorter than Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953.

The coronation elicited both celebrations and protests in the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms. Celebrations in the UK will include street parties, volunteering, special commemorative church services, and a concert at Windsor Castle on 7 May. Surveys carried out in April 2023 suggested that the British public was ambivalent toward the event; the events in London drew large crowds, but were also protested by republican groups. Commonwealth realms including Antigua and Barbuda, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand held celebrations, but other realms used the event to highlight issues such as the effects of British colonialism.

Charles and Camilla's coronation was the first of a British monarch in the 21st century and the 40th coronation to be held at Westminster Abbey since the coronation of William the Conqueror in 1066.

As King Charles III ascends the British throne on May 6, one of his Commonwealth realms - New Zealand - has hinted at its wish to be a republic.

This matter told to reporters hours before leaving for London to attend King Charles III’s coronation by the Prime Minister of New Zealand Mr. Chris Hipkins.

New Zealand is a self-governing former British colony. However, Charles retains a largely ceremonial role as head of state and king and is represented in New Zealand by a governor-general. Like other former colonies, the debate over the constitutional role of the British monarchy in modern times is rife in New Zealand.
