World Wetlands Day - 02 February.

World Wetlands Day is celebrated internationally each year on 02 February. It marks the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar, Iran, on 02 February 1971.

On February 2nd, 1971 a small group of environmentalists adopted the Convention of Wetlands in Ramsar. This Iranian city is located on the shores of the Caspian Sea. The international agreement is also referred to as the Ramsar Convention. Many years later, in 1997, World Wetlands Day was established. Today, over 100 countries participate in events held on this day.

Their  activities include seminars, nature walks, festivals, launches of new policies, announcement of new Ramsar sites, newspaper articles, radio interviews and wetland rehabilitation.

The 2021 theme is ‘Wetlands and Water’. This highlights the role wetlands play in:

  • clean water
  • water supply
  • ecosystem resilience
  • sustainable livelihoods and jobs
  • biodiversity conservation
  • storm protection
  • carbon storage
  • climate change adaptation
  • health and well-being
  • tourism and recreation
