Papua New Guinea’s first prime minister, Michael Somare, has died aged 84, his daughter said on Friday 26 Feb 2021.
He was known as the “father of the nation” because he led the Pacific archipelago to independence from Australia in 1975. He had served as the prime minister of the country four times, between 1975 to 2011, and has been the longest-serving prime minister (17 years).
Prior to independence, Somare was the chief minister of the Australian-administered territory of Papua New Guinea.
