The Wages Board has determined that estate workers must be granted a Rs.900 daily wage and a Rs.100 daily allowance.
The decision was reached at a meeting held with the Labour Commissioner General, estate trade unions and CEOs of estates.
Estate representatives had proposed that the basic daily wage of an employee be increased to Rs.565.
However, estate trade unions and the government had determined that estate owners provide a daily wage of Rs.900 and an allowance of Rs.100.
Accordingly, 11 votes were cast in favour of the proposals by estate employees while eight votes were cast in favour of the proposals by estate owners.
Owing to the majority vote for an increase in the daily wage of estate workers, a gazette notification will be issued declaring the same, while it will be made mandatory for estate owners to ensure the Rs.1,000 daily wage is paid.
