Scientists have discovered 77 species of organisms under the Antarctic ice shelf.

A group of researchers from the German Alfred Wegener Institute and the Center for Polar and Marine Research. Helmholtz drilled two wells using hot water in the Extröm Ice Shelf near Neumeier III station in the southeastern Weddell Sea. One hole went down 192 meters and reached 58 meters of liquid water. The second, 190 meters deep, reached 110 meters of water.

Under a mass of ice covering approximately 200 meters, in cold and dark found out unexpected riot of life. If previous studies have documented only a few dozen hardy life forms, then German scientists have discovered a large number of marine life: 77 species, including saber bryozoans (Melicerita obliqua) and serpulid worms (Paralaeospira sicula). The researchers were struck by the fact that the samples they collected from the seabed were richer in biodiversity than samples from the open water of the continental shelf, where there are sources of light and food. Scientific work published in the journal Current Biology.
