The SAARC observes December 8 each year as the establishment day of the regional body. On this day in 1985, SAARC Charter was adopted in Dhaka, during the first summit of the group. Since then, 08 December every year is commemorated as the SAARC Charter Day. This year marks the 37th anniversary of the regional group.
The aim of SAARC member is to promote stability, peace and progress in the region.
On the occasion of the 37th Charter Day of the SAARC, Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Wednesday 08 December 2021 called for the early convening of the 19th summit while emphasising the need to revitalise the South Asian grouping.
The 19th Summit was scheduled to be held in Islamabad on November 15-16, 2016, but it was cancelled due to "political reasons".
