Indira Gandhi death anniversary - 31 October.

October 31 marks former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's death anniversary. The late Congress politician was assassinated by two of her own bodyguards on October 31, 1984, after she ordered military action in the Golden Temple in Operation Blue Star. Her tragic demise led to many anti-Sikh riots in several parts of the country.

The first and, to date, the only female prime minister of India, Gandhi served as the PM from January 1966 to March 1977 and again from January 1980 until her death in 1984. Indira, popularly referred to as the "Iron lady of India", was one of the most influential and powerful leaders of India. A world figure, she revolutionized the global political arena and became the second-longest-serving Prime Minister of the country after her father, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. In 1999, Indira was named  'Woman of the Millennium' by a BBC poll.
