US joined the International Solar Alliance.

The US joined the International Solar Alliance (ISA) on Wednesday 10th November 2021, becoming the 101st country to join the sunshine club.

The framework agreement was formally signed by John Kerry, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

The US joining the ISA has been in the works for several years. Initially resistant, the US was not among the initial signatories. By 2016, the US decided to join the alliance.

However, it was put on hold during the Trump administration. Given the criticality of solar energy in the transition to a net-zero economy underpinned by a transition away from fossil fuels and the geopolitical situation, the US participation in the ISA was a logical step.

The ISA’s framework, which was first circulated in 2016 to obtain backing from other countries, emphasises on delivering local benefits to all countries through collaborations. The ISA’s key interventions focus on enabling activities, risk mitigation and innovative financing instruments to facilitate the deployment of solar technologies. Earlier at COP26, the US joined the steering committee of the “One Sun One World One Grid” initiative that includes Australia, France, the UK and India.
