Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year 2021.

In everyday use, words are useful tools that communicate assertions, ideas, aspirations, and uncertainties. But they can also become vehicles for ideological conflict. This is what happened to vaccine in 2021.

'Vaccine,' plus 'insurrection,' 'cicada,' 'perseverance,' and more words considred in 2021.  Accordingly, Merriam-Webster has declared "vaccine" as its 2021 word of the year.

At Merriam-Webster, lookups for the word "vaccine" increased 601 percent over 2020, when the first U. S. shot was administered in New York in December 2020.

Merriam-Webster's 2020 word of the year was "pandemic".
