The World’s Biggest Arms Importers.

According to recent numbers by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, India was the world’s biggest arms importer in the past five years, ahead of Saudi-Arabia, Egypt, Australia and China. Australia especially has been one of the countries stepping up its defense purchases recently. In a comparison of post-war arms importers (since 1950), Australia is in rank 15. Looking at the last 25 years, the country makes rank 10.

Security fears related to volatility in Asia were part of the reason why Australia and many countries in the region increased spending on major weapons. Tensions between India and China have also contributed to the perceived need for defense technology in the region.

While India is the biggest customer to the Russian defense industry, second-biggest importer Saudi Arabia buys mainly U.S. arms. China is also growing its own defense industry.
