Largest reservoir in US dips to record low.

The largest reservoir in the US dips to its lowest level. As a result of extreme drought in the region, the surface elevation of Lake Mead fell to 1,071.561 ft above sea level. Lake Mead is the largest reservoir in the US along the Arizona-Nevada border.

This reservoir is the major water supply source for over 20 million people. This lake was created by the Hoover Dam in the 1930s. A number of people were a part of this massive engineering project during the Great Depression. While more than 100 lost their lives in this project.

As a result of climate change the level of the largest reservoir is only declining. There is a depression of about 140ft since 2000 in Lake Mead. This is almost the height of New York’s Statue of Liberty. However, the drought is also gripping several states of southwest America and is also destroying the farming in the region.

Lake Mead:

It is the largest reservoir in the US in terms of water holding capacity. The reservoir is located in the states of Nevada and Arizona. The lake serves water to the states of Arizona, California, along with Mexico and Nevada. It provides sustenance to nearly 20 million people and large areas of farmland.

However, the reservoir has remained below full capacity due to the continuing drought as well as increased water demand. As a result of which there can be a ‘shortage condition’ in 2022 according to the US Bureau of Reclamation.
