Cheshire's Debbie Hewitt to become the first Football Association (FA) chairwoman.

A well-known businesswoman from Cheshire is set to become the first female head of the Football Association in its 157-year history.

Debbie Hewitt, from Hough near Crewe, received a unanimous nomination from the FA board which considered her extensive non-executive career spanning more than 15 years.

Hewitt, whose appointment as the first female chair is subject to ratification by the FA Council, will succeed the interim chairman, Peter McCormick OBE, from January 2022.

She is set to be a permanent successor to Greg Clarke, who resigned last November after making a series of offensive remarks during an appearance before MPs on the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) committee.
