The Princess of Wales’s strapless blue tulle gown paid tribute to Princess Grace of Monaco, who had died five years prior in a 1982 car accident, and her famous role in 'To Catch a Thief.'
Tragically, Diana would also die in the same manner in 1997 at just 36 years old.
When Prince Charles and Princess Diana swept into the 1987 Cannes Film Festival for just a 10-hour visit, the Princess of Wales’ strapless blue tulle gown paid homage to her royal mentor of sorts, who had died five years prior in a car accident—the same fate that, tragically, Diana herself would face in 1997.
Back in 1987, Diana wore Catherine Walker as she and Charles visited the film festival to promote the British film industry. As she donned her now-iconic blue gown, she and Charles took in a screening of the Bette Davis movie The Whales of August and attended a gala dinner before hopping on a plane to head directly back to London from Nice.
Diana’s soft blue dress was accompanied by “a matching chiffon scarf that looped around her neck and billowed out behind her as she walked,” according to British Vogue. The scarf was a dramatic accompaniment to the gown, as it kept “catching the breeze that was high on the evening of the film screening,” Newsweek reported. Diana’s dress was inspired by Grace Kelly, who, after her wedding to Prince Rainier III of Monaco, became Princess Grace of Monaco. Cannes had a special tie to the late princess, as it was where she met her future husband, Prince Rainier, in April 1955, almost exactly one year before they married in April 1956.
