The astronauts safely returned to Earth on March 18, following an extended nine month stay in space. Their journey back comes after a joint NASA and SpaceX crew of four astronauts—from the United States, Japan and Russia—arrived at the International Space Station on March 16 to replace the departing duo.
Suni, 59, and Butch, 62, boarded a SpaceX Dragon capsule alongside fellow NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, splashing down off the coast of Florida following their 17 hour journey. Following their landing, a boat retrieved the pair from the water.
Their homecoming comes nearly 300 days after the NASA astronauts arrived in space aboard the Starliner spacecraft for what was supposed to be an eight-day stay. However, due to various technical issues with the Boeing spacecraft—including a helium leak that began not long after their June launch—NASA decided to send the vehicle back down without the crew.
