World Rat Day is an annual international day observed on April 4. It's an unofficial celebration dedicated to fancy rats who are among the most popular pets. The observing day was created in 2002.
The domesticated rat is one of the most common pet animals. Fancy rats are smart, loyal and easily trained. They also care for themselves which makes them very affordable compared to other small pets like hamsters or guinea pigs. There are many fancy rat varieties which differ in coloring, coat, marking and body type, including even hairless rats.
In 2002, rat owners took to the internet to discuss a possible day dedicated to their beloved pets. They wanted to initiate a World Rat Day that would promote rats as pets. These rat lovers chose April 4th as it was the date that The “Ratlist” began. The “Ratlist” is the oldest mailing list on the internet dedicated to the topic of pet rats.
