International Migrants Day 2023 – Theme
2023 Theme: Act Today. Through this theme, the United Nations calls for nations to affirm their dedication to upholding the human rights of all migrants, irrespective of their legal standing. The objective is to actively combat xenophobia and endorse legislation that condemns the exploitation of migrant workers. Additionally, the theme expressed solidarity with nations that provide assistance, shelter or welcome migrants.
International Migrants Day 2023 – Historical Background
The history of International Migrants Day traces back to December 4, 2000, when the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) officially proclaimed December 18 as a day dedicated to migrants. The decision was influenced by the growing number of migrants worldwide. Notably, on the same day in 1990, the UNGA adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.
Significance of International Migrants Day 2023
According to the United Nations, migrants and displayed individuals, regardless of the reasons for their movement, represent some of the most vulnerable and marginalized members of society. They often face abuse, exploitation, limited access to essential services and xenophobia fueled by misinformation. The day serves as a reminder of the urgent need for global solidarity to address these challenges.
Countries with Higher Migration Rates
On this International Migration Day, it is crucial to acknowledge the countries with the highest migration rates. The United States tops the list, with over 15% of its 331.4 million population being foreign-born. Mexico constitutes the leading origin country for U.S. immigrants, accounting for around 25% of the immigrant population.
Germany (15.8 million) and Saudi Arabia (13.5 million) follow the United States in terms of immigrant populations. Meanwhile, India leads the list for the largest number of natives living abroad, with 17.9 million people, followed by Mexico (11.2 million) and Russia (10.8 million).
